I have five or so years of experience developing more or less daily, with around two years spent maintaining and extending a suite of web applications for a VoIP SaaS provider in the UK healthcare sector.
This has given me a hands-on familiarity with the modern web and a range of technologies on the front and back ends, as well as robust architecture, model and code design and the development of tooling to support ventures as they grow.
Various early personal projects are open source on GitHub. More recent projects include an easy-audit HTTP server and PostgreSQL client for the BEAM, which initially used NIFs via rustler, plus an HTTP datetime library for Rust published to crates.io and a simple DSL for scaffolding.
Technologies
I’m currently using Gleam, Elixir and/or Erlang most days. In any given week, I also use some or all of Rust for tooling, Python or Bash for scripting, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and plenty of SQL, mostly now with Postgres, but previously SQLite.
I develop mostly in the terminal on Linux (Ubuntu, Alpine, Termux), including with Docker, and I’m not afraid of underlying protocols, or TCP/IP in general.
I keep up with trends in the industry and I’ve used plenty of specific implementations in various areas, from natural language processing with Gensim to the major AWS services via LocalStack.
I’m comfortable going on deeper dives where needed.
Approach
I’d describe myself as easy-going, flexible and focused, even under pressure. I enjoy working with other people, as well as independently, whether that’s remote or in-person.
I’m happy with any and all of architecting a new project, implementing feature sets, fixing bugs, refactoring legacy code and improving tooling, test coverage and documentation.
I make a point of learning every day, and refreshing what I know, and I like to be useful. I’m open-minded re location too, having travelled round the country while in a previous role.
